Indian government and the Marxist revisionists have been lying for 7 decades that the Princely States were just British puppets. The case of the Princely State of Jaisalmer, and the treaty it signed with the British would disprove the accusations:

Jaisalmer was the last major Kingdom in the Indian Subcontinent to enter into the subsidiary alliance with the British. Every other state around it had allied with the British, and it was surrounded by the hostile states of Jodhpur, Bikaner, Bahawalpur and the Talpur entity in Sindh. There was also a threat of a Persian invasion.

Jaisalmer negotiated a separate treaty, making it an equal treaty of alliance. Jaisalmer paid no tributes to the British and was not required to send troops when requested. Jaisalmer was given de facto freedom in its foreign affairs. The alliance was limited to the British aiding our state in the event of an invasion.

Jaisalmer always maintained a distance from the rulers of Delhi and continued to stay independent.

As shown from this case study, Princely States were the bulwarks of the Indian home-rule, and people there were insulated from the tyranny of the British dictatorship.
